Demystifying Automated Widow ShadesMark von Keszycki
Automated window shades can save energy, enhance security and increase your enjoyment of your home.
You come home at the end of a long day. It’s dark outside, so you flip on the lights. But all of the window shades are open and anyone outside can see right in. Wouldn’t it be nice to lower all of the window shades and draw the curtains with a touch of a button? Automated window shades aren’t new, but choices are greater, installation is simpler and getting started is more affordable than ever before. Here are a few considerations to help guide you in picking what’s best for your home.
New Construction or Retrofit
- Battery-operated shades make it possible to retrofit motorized assemblies in place of existing manual shades without additional construction or wiring. This can be done a single window or a room at a time, wherever they’re needed most. Control can be by handheld remote, smartphone or tablet, and 3 to 5-year battery-life assures that they’re virtually maintenance-free.
- Hardwired systems are ideal for new construction projects where whole-house coverage is the goal and the necessary wiring can be easily run. This also allows integration with whole-house control systems, where centralized operation is desired.
Choice of Styles
- Roller shades offer a clean look and disappear completely from view when retracted.
- Cellular or honeycomb shades provide excellent insulation against summer heat and winter cold. All are available in sheer, semi-transparent and black-out fabrics. The latter are great for home media environments.
Many large homes have cathedral ceilings and 2-story foyers with windows placed far from the ground. Automated window shades are particularly suited to these locations to give you control over ambient light from windows you’ve never been able to reach before. Large windows (up to 144”) are no problem.
Add automation to your own draperies for a truly custom design experience. You can now get track-less drapery rods with no external motors or wires, while retaining the convenience of manual operation if you choose.
