Multi-Room Audio Systems
Multi-room audio systems have been around forever—but oh my, have they changed! In the early days of hi-fi, you would simply connect another pair of speakers (or two) to your stereo system, install them in another room, and then add some separate volume controls that let you adjust how loud the speakers were played without running into the room where the stereo system was located. Not a very elegant solution, but serviceable. Today multi-room audio systems are much more sophisticated, and quite frankly that’s a very good thing.

Centralized location
In the modern home, separate room air conditioners and heaters have been replaced by a single, energy efficient, central HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) system. Multi-room audio systems are similar. Instead of separate a stereo system or tabletop radio in every room, the audio system is centralized. Only the speakers and some sort of controller that operates the remotely located system (like a thermostat) have to be installed in each room.

Centralized music content
There are two huge advantages to a multi-room audio system. The first is easy to explain: it eliminates the clutter and confusion of separate systems throughout the home. Separate systems not only take up room, they usually operate much differently. Simply turning on the radio can be vastly different in the kitchen than in the bedroom. Life is tough enough already. Who needs even more confusion?

The second and biggest advantage is the ability to centralize all your music content. For many people today, that content in on a computer. Downloading songs and albums is a whole lot easier, quicker, and more convenient that running to the mall. But once those songs are on the computer, how do you listen to them in the bedroom, den, living room, etc? A multi-room audio system takes all that downloaded music and lets you play whatever you want, anywhere in the house. And with some systems, the music doesn’t even have to be downloaded. Premium Internet music providers such as Rhapsody®, Pandora®, and SIRIUS/XM® stream customized music content directly to your computer, giving you instantaneous access to an incredible library of songs and artists.
